How do you calculate a percentage discount?
The simple formula
Discount amount = (Original price × Percentage) ÷ 100 Final price = Original price − Discount amount - Initial price: €150
- Discount: 30%
- Calculation: (150 × 30) ÷ 100 = €45 of discount
- Final price: 150 − 45 = €105

Module 3: Percentage Variation (Increase/Decrease)
You know initial value + final value You find percentage increase or decreaseVariation (%) = ((Valeur finale − Valeur initiale) ÷ Valeur initiale) × 100 - Increase: ((12,000 − 10,000) ÷ 10,000) × 100 = + 20%
Module 4: Professional Calculations (Margin + VAT)
You know Cost price + desired margin + VAT You find : selling price excluding and including VATPrix de vente HT = Prix de revient × (1 + Marge %)Prix de vente TTC = Prix de vente HT × (1 + TVA %) - Selling price excluding VAT: 50 × 1,40 = 70 € HT

F.A.Q
What is a percentage discount?
A percentage discount is a proportional reduction of the original price. For example, a 20% discount means you pay 80% of the original price. This is the most common type of discount in retail (sales, promotions, promo codes).
What is the difference between a discount and a reduction?
Terms discount et reduction are often used interchangeably. However:
- Hand off : discount applied to the selling price (sales, promotions)
- Discount : broader term including discounts, rebates, refunds, and allowances
How do I apply a discount to multiple items?
1 method Calculate the discount for each item, then add up the final prices.
2 method Add the initial prices together, then apply the discount to the total.
Example 2 items at €100 each with a 20% discount
- Method 1: (100 − 20) + (100 − 20) = 80 + 80 = €160
- Method 2: (100 + 100) − 40 = 200 − 40 = €160 ✓
Both methods give the same result.
Discount + VAT: how does it work?
VAT applies after the discount:
Prix HT initial → Appliquer la remise → Prix HT final → Ajouter la TVA → Prix TTCExample Item priced at €100 excluding VAT, with a 20% discount and 20% VAT.
- Price after discount: 100 − 20 = 80 € HT
- Price including VAT: 80 × 1,20 = 96 € TTC
Can multiple discounts be combined?
Yes, but be careful! Discounts multiply, they do not add up.
Prix final = Prix initial × (1 − Remise 1) × (1 − Remise 2)Example €100 with 10% + 20% discount
- ❌ False: 100 − 10 − 20 = €70
- ✓ Correct: 100 × 0,90 × 0,80 = €72
How do you calculate a percentage discount?
Discounts vary depending on the season and the sector:
- Winter/Summer Sales 30 to 50%
- Black Friday 20 to 70%
- codes 5 to 25%
- B2B discounts : 10 to 40% depending on the volume
